Alloy Wheel Cleaner

Question:

As well as the usual road dirt and grime on my alloy wheels I have noticed some white areas. What are they and will Simoniz Alloy Wheel Cleaner remove them?

Answer:

This is probably alloy oxidisation. This is a natural effect common on exposed aluminium and Simoniz Alloy Wheel Cleaner is ideal for removing it. However if your alloy wheels are coated with a lacquer and you are seeing this white material, it suggests that the lacquer is beginning to break down, allowing air and moisture to reach the alloy. It will be more difficult to clean and in severe cases you may need to have the wheels stripped and re-lacquered.

Antifreeze

Question:

Does Holts Antifreeze meet the requirements of BS6580:1992?

Answer:

Yes. BS6580:1992 includes requirements to ensure that the anti freeze meets stringent corrosion protection standards. Holts antifreeze meets these standards and helps prevent corrosion build up in the cooling system. This is why it is recommended that anti freeze is maintained at the correct strength all year round.

Question:

Is Holt's Antifreeze a Mono-Ethylene Glycol (M.E.G) based formulation?

Answer:

Yes. M.E.G. remains unaffected by heat and therefore will not evaporate and lose its effectiveness, unlike methanol based antifreezes.

Question:

Is Holt's Antifreeze compatible with aluminium engines?

Answer:

Yes. All the components of Holts antifreeze including the corrosion inhibitors are chosen to be compatible with both cast iron and aluminium engines.

Answer:

Upholstery Cleaner is general purpose cleaner which will remove everyday dirt and soil from a variety of materials and surfaces. It will also remove some light stains of some substances. However this will depend on several factors such as what has caused the stain, what the stained material is and how long the stain has been there. If Upholstery Cleaner is unsuccessful it will be necessary to use a specialist stain removing product.

Duplicolor Paint

Question:

How can I ensure the best results from Holts Duplicolor Paint?

Answer:

For best results apply the paint on a warm, dry day or inside a heated, but well ventilated garage. To achieve a professional finish ensure the surface is dry, clean and grease free before use.

Question:

How long should I leave between coats of paint?

Answer:

When spray painting in good conditions (above 15°C, dry conditions, etc) we would recommend the following timings/instructions:

  1. Primer coatings:  Apply several light coats, leaving about 10-15 minutes (allow the paint to become 'tacky') between each one, which makes sure that all solvents have evaporated off and will not be trapped between the layers which can lead to bubbles forming between the layers.
  2. Primer -> Colour:  The primer stage once completed should be left to dry for at least 2 hours, wet and dry paper should then be applied to achieve a smooth finish.
  3. Colour coatings:  Apply several light coats, leaving about 10-15 minutes (allow the paint to become 'tacky') between each one, which again makes sure that all solvents have evaporated off and will not be trapped between the layers which can lead to bubbles forming between the layers.
  4. Colour -> Lacquer:  We would recommend that the lacquer is applied 45-60 minutes after the last coat of the metallic colour paint.
  5. Lacquer coatings:  Again apply several light coats, leaving about 10-15 minutes (allow the lacquer to become 'tacky') between each one, which makes sure that all solvents have evaporated off and will not be trapped between the layers which can lead to bubbles forming between the layers.
  6. Finishing Touches:  If any finishing touches are required (removing overspray etc) we would then recommend leaving the lacquer and paint to fully dry/harden for a week (7 days), before anything is used to cut it back etc.

If spraying in colder conditions we would recommend extending the drying times, but please be aware that when spray painting in cold conditions dampness from the atmosphere has the potential to be picked up by the paint and cause a few different problems including a matt/flat finish or a milky bloom forming.

Firegum

Question:

Does Firegum contain silicone?

Answer:

No, and is safe in temperatures up to 1000oC.

Glass Cleaner

Question:

I've used glass cleaner but am getting smearing on my windscreen. What is causing this and how can I avoid it?

Answer:

The cause is probably residual road grime on the windscreen wipers spreading across the screen when you switch on the wipers. The best way to avoid this is to clean the wiper blades using glass cleaner on a clean cloth or tissue at the same time as you clean the rest of the glass. Don't forget the rear windscreen wiper blade as well.

For smear free driving frequent use of a good quality screenwash will also help.

Polishes

Question:

Is it important to wax your car?

Answer:

Yes, not only does waxing leave a high shine on your vehicle it is also highly effective in removing surface oxidation and road grime build up. The clear film of wax that is left on the vehicle after polishing acts as a protective layer to your finish and helps to make water bead and easier to shed thus reducing environmental damage to your paintwork.

Question:

How often should I wax my car?

Answer:

Waxing every 90 days is sufficient for vehicles exposed to the highest level of environmental elements, dependent upon type of polish used.

I have emptied the contents of the bottle into the tank by mistake - will this cause any damage?

Answer:

This should not cause any damage but we would recommend that the fuel tank is topped up to dilute the mix.

Question:

Is it safe to use Redex in a brand new car?

Answer:

Although the majority of handbooks advise against using additives in new cars, to do so would not be detrimental to the car. However before using any additive we strongly recommend that you check that your warranty will not be affected.

Question:

What is a Rubbing Compound?

Answer:

Simoniz Rubbing Compound is heavy duty cleaner, designed to blend in new paint-work, restore very dull and badly weathered paint-work.

Question:

What is the best way of removing stains from alloy wheels?

Shampoos

Question:

Is it safe to use a washing-up liquid to wash my car?

Answer:

Would you use Car Shampoo to clean your dishes?

Dish detergents are designed to be used in hot water and to cut through grease - therefore they are likely to penetrate the wax, leaving your car unprotected. Also, many washing up liquids contain salt as a thickener, which will lead to rust and damaged metalwork over time. We recommend Simoniz Wash and Wax - this is a powerful yet mild detergent designed to remove stubborn dirt, grime and other harmful deposits, and to leave a protective layer of Simoniz wax.

Question:

Do I need to rinse off the foam?

Answer:

Tyreweld

Question:

Why do I need Tyreweld?

Answer:

With over 28m cars in the UK and 7.3 million punctures on British Roads every year = 1 in 4 chance of developing a puncture. On average a car user will incure a puncture every 38k miles. Tyreweld eliminates the need for immediate tyre change. The product is endorsed by the National Tyre distributors association

Question:

What is Tyreweld?

Answer:

Tyreweld is a water based latex emulsion (milky white solution) which coats the inner if the tyre, locating and temporarily sealing the puncture and developing a protective latex film over the top. Tyreweld can be removed with soapy warm water, the tyre dried and then in accordance with British Standards the tyre buffed on a buffing wheel. This will roughen the surface to provide an adequate key to take the patch ensuring all residual dry latex will be removed and nothing will remain to react with the patch or adhesive.

Question:

How does Tyreweld Work?

Answer:

The Tyreweld solution is transferred into the tyre via the valve connector, providing enough pressure to re-inflate the tyre. When the car is driven at a reduced speed (do not exceed 30mph) the centrifugal force distributes the solution around the tyre which 'cures' to provide and effective 'get you home' repair. At the earliest opportunity the tyre must be taken to a Professional Tyre Repairer for appropriate attention.

Question:

When should I use Tyreweld?

Answer:

In the event of an emergency puncture repair situation. Tyreweld is not a permanent repair but is designed to get you home. The tyre should then be repaired or replaced depending on the severity of the puncture. Tyreweld is not suitable for large holes or repairs to the tyre wall. Do not use where the tyre has been displaced from the rim.

Question:

Does Tyreweld Work?

Answer:

Considerable success has been achieved with Tyreweld in tubeless tyres with punctures upto 5mm in diameter. However the effectiveness of the product is reduced with tubed tyres. Tyreweld is not suitable for tyres that have side wall damage or when the tyre has come off the rim due to driving for a prolonged period with a flat tyre.

Question:

Does Tyreweld cause wheel unbalancing?

Answer:

Because of Tyrewelds liquid formulation spreading itself evenly around the tyre when driven prior to it fully curing it should not affect wheel balancing. Also because cars must be driven at a reduced speed not exceeding 30mph/45kph, any minor effects on wheel balance will not be observable.

Question:

What size of Holts Tyreweld should I use on my car?

Answer:

Tyre width up to 155mm use 300ml

Tyre width over 155mm use 400ml

4x4 and larger tyres use 500ml

Question:

Can a tyre be repaired after the use of Holts Tyreweld?

Answer:

Yes. Should the tyre be safe to repair, Holts Tyreweld can be flushed out of the tyre. Always follow the advice of the Tyre repairer.

Question:

Is tyre care important?

Answer:

Regular tyre maintenance is an easy and inexpensive way to prolong the life of tyres. Check tyres regularly either at home or when visiting a garage or filling station.

Question:

Is this product endorsed?

Answer:

This is the only product to be endorsed by the National Tyre Distributors Association.

Water Spotting

Question:

I've noticed some spots appearing on my car shortly after it rained. What are they?

Answer:

This is probably a phenomena known as water spotting.

It isn't fully understood but usually affects red, dark blue or green cars and the paintwork is usually already in a fairly poor condition, or the car has had a respray.

What is thought to happen is that when paint in this condition has a polish applied, any rain that falls shortly afterwards forms beads which act like magnifying glasses. These intensify the rays of the sun and cause "bleaching" of the pigments in the paint.

Question:

How can I remove them?

Answer:

It is usually necessary to cut back the top layer of paint to remove the water spots. This can be done with Simoniz Colour Restorer or in very severe cases Simoniz Rubbing Compound. Once the water spots have been removed the newly exposed paintwork should be protected with a good quality wax polish such as Simoniz Original Wax.

Wondarweld

Question:

Can Wondarweld be used on a diesel engine?

Answer:

The product will work on a diesel engine but we recommend that the injectors are left in place.
