Do You Know Your Car Warning Lights?

Inside view of a man driving a car at night. Bright lights at background.

All drivers dread seeing a warning light on their dashboard. It’s one of those things that makes you think, “why me? why now?!”.  But what makes it even more worrying is when you don’t know what the warning light means, so you’re at a loss as to whether to keep driving or call your breakdown provider.

We think that few drivers could name every type of dashboard warning light. After all, they’re pretty rare, and something you’d only look-up if one actually appeared. The problem with that is, driving with a warning light can cause even bigger problems down the road, and you could fail your MOT if one comes on during the test.

Whether you’re a new driver or have been on the road for years, we want to know how well you know your warning lights.

(function(d,s,id,u){
if (d.getElementById(id)) return;
var js, sjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],
t = Math.floor(new Date().getTime() / 1000000);
js=d.createElement(s); js.id=id; js.async=1; js.src=u+’?’+t;
sjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, sjs);
}(document, ‘script’, ‘os-widget-jssdk’, ‘https://www.opinionstage.com/assets/loader.js’));

So, how well did you do? Are you a dashboard whizz who’s clued up on their warning lights, or are you reaching for your car’s manual as we speak? Whatever your result, we’d love to hear from you, so let us know how you did on Facebook and Twitter.

Getting to know your car’s dashboard warning lights is not only great for your own safety, it’s an essential part of keeping your car well maintained. It can also help you avoid some seriously costly repair bills by not driving when there’s a warning light on – and surely that alone is worth doing a bit of homework on what each light means?
