Euro 2016: The Final

The Finals

The excitement has reached fever pitch in the Redex office (and offices all around the continent, we imagine), as we make our way to the Redex Car Euro Championships final. The proud footballing and motoring nation of Italy take on the relative minnows of Wales. Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and deadly Joe Ledley can’t help the Welsh now, they are going to have to rely upon the might of the Gilbern Invader – a car out of production since 1973 – to defeat the might of the Italians.

The task may seem difficult — the Italian’s car heritage is as rich as their football history. Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lamborghini sit proudly alongside the likes of Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Alessandro Del Piero and Gianluigi Buffon – as some of the greatest names in their respective disciplines.

But finals are made for upsets – just ask the Greeks about 2004. Can Wales spring a surprise, complete the impossible and topple the mighty Italians?

Wales 1-4 Italy

Unfortunately for Wales, the Italians didn’t suffer a Roy Hodgson moment when selecting their entry for the final. Picking the Lamborghini Gallardo and leaving the Fiat 500 on the subs’ bench meant a routine victory for the Italian side – whose supercar heritage gave them a distinct advantage over many of their rivals.

Romping to victory in four of the categories, and only narrowly losing in the MPG section, the result was never in doubt for the Gallardo as soon as the line-ups were announced. Like an 18-year old making his debut on a rainy Tuesday night in Stoke, the Gilbern Invader looked out of its depth from the off.

A good run for the Welsh though, particularly for a nation with no active mainstream car manufacturers. And the next tournament in four years could come at the perfect time for Wales, with supercar manufacturer TVR and Aston Martin both announcing plans to open manufacturing plants in the country. The 2020 Redex Car Euro Championship could see Wales attempting the get their own back against the Italians.

So often the stage for the biggest players, it is fitting that the inaugural championships were won by the Lamborghini Gallardo. The stuff of dreams, the Gallardo is so often the byword for supercar excellence – routinely topping car of the year polls. But this must now rank as Lamborghini’s greatest achievement, securing victory in the Redex Euro Car Championships.

Congratulations Italy – the first ever winner of the Redex Car Euro Championships.
