How do I prepare my car for painting?

To ensure a flawless finish, it’s important to apply car paint to a smooth, prepared surface free of dirt, wax, silicone, etc. We recommend that you apply paint to your car in warm weather, preferably in a garage. A low temperature can extend the drying time and make it more likely that foreign bodies will dry into the paint surface.

Before you begin painting, wash and dry the vehicle thoroughly – ensuring all dirt, grime and deposits are removed. Then, using fine wet and dry sand paper (2000 grit is best), rub down the area you wish to paint to create a “key” for the new paint. This is an important step, as it allows the paint to adhere to the surface of the vehicle.

If you have any fine scratches or swirls on your car’s paintwork, try Simoniz Scratch & Swirl Remover before reaching for the paint tin. This advanced solution is capable of restoring the colour of your exterior paint, and is guaranteed to remove scratches and oxidation.
